The Hate U Give - Angie Thomas

Starr is an ordinary black teenage girl in the Garden Heights but is split in two worlds, the fancy school she attends and the place full of gangs that she lives in. The balance between these worlds is destroyed when her friend Khalil is shot by an officer. He was unarmed.

Soon after her story is on the headlines, some call it justice and some call it another example of racism. The police and local drug lords try to intimidate Starr and her family not to speak. But the real thing people want to know is. What happened that night? And the only person who can truthfully answer that is Starr. Many black lives are in Starr’s lives, and what she says could change society.

This gripping story is inspired by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and shows us what real injustice looks like. This story is violent, but is extremely gripping and will keep you reading until the end. Therefore I recommend this book to 14+.
